Built for engineering

Redmine for IT and software teams

Redmine was built by developers for tracking software work, and it still shows: versions, roadmaps, commit-linked issues and per-tracker workflows are core features, not add-ons. RedminePRO runs it managed, at $24/mo for 25 users, with no per-seat pricing on a team that is mostly engineers.

The workflow this is built around

A software team's tracker earns its keep in one loop, run continuously: something gets reported or planned, it gets worked, the work lands in the repository, and it ships in a release. Redmine models that loop natively.

Trackers separate the kinds of work. Bug, Feature, Support and Task are the defaults, and you add your own — Incident, Tech Debt, Change Request. Each tracker gets its own workflow, its own field set and its own permissions, so a bug and a change request do not have to pretend to be the same object with a different label.

Statuses and workflows are defined per role. Which transitions each role can make is a grid you configure: a developer can move something to Resolved, a QA role can move it from Resolved to Closed or back to In Progress, a reporter can do neither. Field permissions sit in the same grid — a field can be required at one status and read-only at another.

Versions carry the release. A version is a named target with a due date. Assign issues to it and the Roadmap becomes a live release plan showing what is done, what is open and what is at risk. Versions can be shared across subprojects, so a platform release spanning three component projects tracks in one place.

Issue relations model the actual dependencies. Blocks and blocked by stop a version closing while something upstream is open. Precedes and follows shift dependent dates automatically when a predecessor moves. Subtasks roll estimates and progress up to a parent, so an epic is a real object rather than a naming convention.

Repository integration

Connect a Git repository and Redmine reads the commit log. Commit messages referencing an issue — Refs #482, Fixes #482 — attach the commit to that issue and can transition its status automatically. The result is that an issue's history contains the code that resolved it, and a release version links to the commits that constitute it. Nobody has to maintain that link by hand, which is the only reason it stays accurate. RedminePRO ships GitLab and Bitbucket integrations out of the box, alongside Slack, Discord, Rocket.Chat and Mattermost for notifications. Because every plan includes full Redmine administrator access, repository configuration and commit-keyword mapping are yours to set — you are not filing a ticket with your host to change which keyword closes an issue.

Agile: boards and sprints

The Plus plan at $49/mo adds a Kanban board and Scrum on top of the standard Redmine issue model. The board is a view of the same issues, not a separate system, so an issue dragged across a board is the same object that carries the commit history, the time entries and the version assignment. Teams that run a board in one tool and a tracker in another spend real time reconciling them. Sprint planning maps onto versions with dates; estimated and spent hours are first-class fields, and the time report groups by user, activity, version or custom field. The Business plan at $169/mo adds Gantt and portfolio planning and statistics and analytics, which is usually where multi-team engineering organizations end up.

Seat counts on an engineering team

Software teams have a specific cost problem: the tracker is used by everyone — developers, QA, product, design, support, and the account manager who needs to see whether the customer's bug is fixed. On per-seat pricing every one of those people is a line item, so the rational move is to restrict access, which defeats the purpose of a shared tracker. RedminePRO is flat: $24/mo covers 25 users, $49/mo covers 100, $169/mo covers 250, and projects are unlimited on all of them. A read-only stakeholder costs the same as a lead engineer: nothing extra. Coming from Jira

The usual trigger is a renewal quote. Issues, comment history, attachments, users, statuses, priorities, custom fields and project structure map onto Redmine equivalents cleanly. Jira workflows map onto Redmine workflows, though the shape rarely matches one to one and this is where the design conversation happens. JQL filters become Redmine saved queries; boards become the Kanban board on Plus; marketplace apps are the part that needs a decision. The assessment is free — we tell you in writing what carries over, what needs a mapping decision and how long it takes. The migration itself is a one-time professional-services fee, quoted after the assessment; we say so plainly rather than implying it comes bundled. What we run so you don't

Self-hosted Redmine is a Ruby application with a database, a web server, a mail path and a plugin set, and the cost of running it is not the server — it is the afternoon in month seven when a Redmine upgrade collides with a plugin and someone senior loses a day. On RedminePRO, Redmine version upgrades, OS and stack patching, encrypted continuous backups with point-in-time recovery, TLS, scaling and disaster recovery are ours. Administrator access and your configuration stay yours. What managed covers · compared with self-hosting.

IT & software — FAQ.

Can I connect Redmine to GitLab or Bitbucket?
Yes. RedminePRO includes GitLab and Bitbucket integrations out of the box, and Redmine's native repository support links commits to issues through commit-message keywords such as Refs #482 and Fixes #482. Because every plan includes full Redmine administrator access, you configure the repository connections and keyword mapping yourself.
Does Redmine support Scrum and Kanban?
The Plus plan at $49/mo adds a Kanban board and Scrum on top of core Redmine. The board is a view of the same issues rather than a separate system, so an issue on the board carries the same history, time entries and version assignment as it does everywhere else.
How much does Redmine hosting cost for a 40-person engineering team?
$49/mo on the Plus plan, which covers up to 100 users with unlimited projects. Pricing is flat, so read-only stakeholders in support, product or sales cost nothing extra. Annual billing is $490/year, which is ten months' cost.
Can we migrate from Jira to Redmine?
Yes. Issues, comments, attachments, users, custom fields and project structure map cleanly; workflows and marketplace apps need a mapping decision. The assessment is free and gives you a written scope; the migration itself is a one-time professional-services fee quoted after it.
